UHSA administration, staff and faculty members (pictured to right) attended the Capacity Building Workshop offered by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP). The workshop took place on the beautiful island of Barbados during March 19-22, 2017. CAAM-HP is the legally constituted body that is empowered to determine and prescribe standards and to accredit programs of medical education on behalf of the contracting parties in CARICOM. Beginning on November 1, 2016, UHSA will be offering orientation services at the Universidad Central de Bayamón. Students will learn about UHSA programs and the student loan program. Dr. Leticia Ubinas from the University of Health Sciences Antigua has been selected to present at the World Psychiatry Association International Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa this November. She will be presenting on Patient Welfare, Patient Autonomy and Social Justice. She will also be conducting a survey on mental illness, a validated and standardized instrument that will be applied with the authors authorization to as many participants as possible. On September 28, the University of Health Sciences Antigua opened the doors of The Free Clinic of English Harbour, which will serve hundreds of local residents who do not have access to health insurance or medical care. UHSA medical students will run the free clinic with supervision from faculty members. The Free Clinic of English Harbour provides an atmosphere of educational opportunities where patients, students and health professionals learn from one another and work together. In August 2016, the University of Health Sciences Antigua unveiled the James R. Iannuzzi Clinical Skills Teaching and Assessment Unit, which includes a Standardized Patient Unit, one of the best in the Caribbean. The goal of the Standardized Patient Unit is enhanced education and the assessment of clinical skills, which has been recognized as main criteria for the modern physician. UHSA is excited to announced that its Vice President of Institutional Advancement and International Affairs, Ms. Lyzette Roman, has been appointed as Director of the Northeast Region for the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME). NAMME was established in 1975 by a group of educators concerned about the shortage of minority health care providers. NAMME is dedicated to improving the overall health status of racial / ethnic populations.
